Truth or Myth?

1 min read
As a creative artist photographer who paints with light, I often look to great painters, sculptors, and image makers from the past to inspire me and call me to excel as far as I can.

I love the challenge of making my photographic images look like paintings. That is why I love natural light more than artificial light. Natural light is luminous - ever changing, casting shadows, interacting with mist, air, moisture, texture, moving and still objects and people.

I have recently returned to myth-making - creating images of figures, personalities, and heroes who are human but seeking to be divine or super-human.

We are human creatures with a creative spirit that yearns for the sublime, the heavenly vision of what is eternal - love, hope, peace, and undying friedship.

Anyone can doodle with pen and pencil and draw whatever lines and shapes they fancy. And anyone can pick up a brush or spray can and paint away with gusto and glee.  Digital tools, like camcorders, cell phones, and cameras make it easy for anyone and everyone to shoot away at any subject at any time and any place they desire.

The only limit to creativity is the desire and freedom to think and express ourselves with the tools at our disposal. Of course, we express with our feelings, thoughts, attitudes, and desires.  So I believe that photography is one of the freest means of artistic expression we have at our disposal every day and everywhere we go. We can shoot the sublime or the banal, the beautiful or the ugly, the delicate or the crude, the gracious or the rude.

What we shoot is what we see. And how we shoot hopefully reveals what we think about the world around us and the people we meet.

I look forward to the spring and summer months when the weather is warmer, and the days are longer, and when the sun plays with the sky and earth as it moves lazily along is course. What variety of hue,  color, shadow, and tone.  Who needs a studio - the earth is mine!

I love to shoot in natural light, especially outdoors.  Window light works great also.  Natural light varies so much and so frequently - soft morning glow, sharp midday glare, hazy sunset, cloudly grey cast, twilight blue - so many varietions, hues, tones, color changes, moods, and settings! And when you add the human subject to these natural light varietions, you get a myriad variety of moods, emotions, and contrasts.  I can't think of a more beautiful combination - natural light, the human subject, and a natural setting - for creative artistic photography! It's like painting with light!

This summer has been fantastic for photo shooting outdoors as well as indoors.  I make it a practice to shoot in any kind of weather under any circumstances - rainy, cloudy, low light, dark, too much light, etc.  Why wait for the ideal circumstances? It may or may not come when you are ready to shoot.  My goal is to make any circumstance an ideal setting for great shots.

I love natural light and the way it creates mood and atmosphere - highlighting textures one moment - hiding them the next moment - dim and soft - intense and harsh - ever changing and never the same.

Without light we can't see and with natural light we see naturally nature at its best and its worst.

I am a painter by training and I love to paint with light, especially natural light in all its hues and rainbow splashes.
